Understanding the Claims Process
Starving Students has loss and damage claims on less than 2% of our moves, but we know that's not important if it happened on your move. Rest assured that we will handle your claim promptly and fairly.

Our claim procedures are governed by strict rules that can be frustrating, but all licensed moving companies are required to abide by them. Below are some frequently asked questions about the claims process.

  1. How do I file a claim?

  2. How long do I have to file a claim?

  3. What kind of proof is needed to support a claim?

  4. How long does it take to get my settlement?

  5. What will I get for my damaged items?

  1. How do I file a claim?
    • To file a claim for lost or damaged household goods, please contact Compass Management Corporation:

  2. How long do I have to file a claim?
The sooner the better, as it gets harder and harder to determine what happened as time passes. Different states have different time limits for just this reason. And please don't get the item fixed before you file the claim. We may want to see the damage, and or choose the appropriate repair professional.

California allows you 9 months from the date of the move, most other states allow 90 days.

  3. What kind of proof is needed to support a claim?
Our driver does an inventory at the beginning of every move to indicate what we'll be moving, and if it has prior damage. The easiest claims to handle are the ones where either the driver or customer has indicated on the paperwork that something was damaged. The hardest claims to prove are the "missing" items that were not listed on the inventory.

  4. How long does it take to get my settlement?
Most claims are settled within 30 to 60 days after receipt of a complete claim form.

  5. What will I get for my damaged items?
Before the move begins you will select a "valuation" which puts a value on your goods and limits a moving company's liability for loss. On local moves we provide two valuation options:
    1. Basic Coverage - This ensures coverage for lost or damaged items at 60 cents multiplied by the weight of the item. If your 2-year old TV, weighing 7 lbs, is lost or damaged, you would recover $42 (70 lbs. x 60 cents.) This is very minimal protection and your goods are probably worth considerably more. This coverage is provided at no additional charge on all moves.
    2. Actual Cash Value - This option provides for loss or damage based on actual cash value, including depreciation, at the time of loss or damage, up to the total dollar amount of value declared by you. Continuing the example, if you purchased that 2-year old TV new for $300, you would recover its current worth, about $250. We charge $149 for up to $20,000 of Actual Cash Value protection.
