Fifty-seven years ago today, the United States granted a patent on something that has made life and checking out a lot easier for everyone -- the barcode. The barcode, which those of us that have worked in retail are extremely pleased about its implementation. For those of you unfamiliar with what a barcode is, it's a series of differnt-shaped lines on the outside of most product that allows easy scanning when purchases ar e being made or something else requires the input of a series of numbers.Turns out the barcode was first invented by Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver who originally patented as a circle that could be scanned from any direction but later evolved into the rectangle-shaped barcode that we all love so much.
